The Greater Generation

The Greater Generation

The Greatest Generation gets credit for winning World War II and braving the Depression. But the Baby Boomers? All they get credit for is knowing how to order a tall skim double latte. What really is the true legacy of the Boomers? Summoning the amazing sea changes they’ve made in American culture, this passionately debated book recasts the much-maligned Boomers as a Greater Generation with a lasting legacy of tolerance and equality for all. From women’s rights to environmental protections to curbing racial inequality, “The Greater Generation” tells the story of this generation’s accomplishments-and finally gives Boomers their due.

Q&A with Surgeon General Vivek Murthy: Community Health, Measles, and Teleportation

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

He’s treated thousands of patients in the U.S. and helped people around the globe. He’s trained students to become doctors, founded a nonprofit to combat HIV/AIDS, practices yoga daily, and keeps unflavored almond milk in his fridge. At 37, he is now one of the youngest Americans — and the first Indian American — to serve as the Surgeon General of the United States.

He’s America’s doctor — and he stopped by the White House recently to answer a few questions that you might want to know the answer to, like: What does he want to do as Surgeon General? What should you do to stay healthy? Will he ever dunk on a NBA-regulation basketball hoop?

Age-old questions. Check out his answers below:

Netanyahu Declines Invite To Meet With Senate Democrats

WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined on Tuesday an invitation to meet with U.S. Senate Democrats during his trip to Washington next week.

“Though I greatly appreciate your kind invitation to meet with Democratic Senators, I believe that doing so at this time could compound the misperception of partisanship regarding my upcoming visit,” Netanyahu wrote in a letter to Senators Richard Durbin and Dianne Feinstein obtained by Reuters.

Durbin and Feinstein, two senior Senate Democrats, invited Netanyahu to a closed-door meeting with Democratic senators in a letter on Monday, warning that making U.S.-Israeli relations a partisan political issue could have “lasting repercussions.”

Republican congressional leaders broke diplomatic protocol by consulting neither the White House nor Democrats in Congress before inviting Netanyahu to address a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and Senate.

Netanyahu has faced criticism at home and abroad for his decision to address the U.S. Congress two weeks before Israeli elections and at a sensitive point in international negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

In his letter, Netanyahu said he agreed “wholeheartedly” that strong ties between the United States and Israel have been built on bipartisan support. “I also fully understand the importance of bipartisan support for ensuring that our alliance remains strong in the future,” he wrote.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to address lawmakers from both parties on Tuesday and said he regretted that the invitation has been perceived by some as partisan.

“I can assure you my sole intention in accepting it was to voice Israel’s grave concerns about a potential nuclear agreement with Iran that could threaten the survival of my country,” Netanyahu wrote.

He said he would be glad to address a bipartisan meeting of senators during a future visit to Washington.

Spokesmen for Durbin and Feinstein could not immediately be reached for comment. (Reporting by Patricia Zengerle; Editing by Doina Chiacu)

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. What I Learned During Our Week of Doing Nothing

This past week was the mid-winter break, and we were all home. There were a couple days of snow, temperatures below freezing, and for two days, the car was in the shop. We got out to the movies once, and to an indoor play gym, but for most of it, we were stuck at home.

There was probably a bit more TV watching than there should have been.

2015-02-22-tvangel.jpg

We did a couple of science experiments, all of which involved cornstarch and dish soap.

2015-02-22-moondough.jpg

And some brownie-making. And brownie-batter-licking.

2015-02-22-brownie.jpg

But if you asked what we did all week, I would have said, “ummmm, nothing.”

Can I tell you how much I loved it? This week of nothing was one of my favorite “vacations.” On my Facebook feed were pictures of families in tropical places, enjoying the sun and the outdoors, and although I was definitely envious, I really liked being homebound with my family.

A couple of times I noticed myself feeling critical. I wondered if I should have taken advantage of this rare time we all had together, with few obligations and plans. Should we have taken the kids to a museum in the city, a Broadway show? Should we have done more art projects, played more board games, baked a few more batches of brownies? Should I have tried to exercise more? Should I have written more? What could I do to give this precious time together more meaning?

Then, I let those thoughts go. And I let the days go. But I sunk myself into them. The baby playing cars on the floor (he’s currently obsessed), the big boy rereading every book in the house (he’s a certified bookworm). All of us laughing and tickling each other on the bed. My husband and me staying up “late,” catching up on Girls and The Mindy Project.

2015-02-22-10407800_10153111635244515_3332912624850281543_n.jpg

Seriously, what more is there than this? Being together with the people I love most. That’s all there is in this world, really.

But there is this pressure in our culture right now to do with your kids. To have something to show for your time together. Should we blame Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest? Should we blame the media? The Mommy Wars? Each other? I don’t know. But the pressure is there.

I feel it when my son tells me he doesn’t want to continue with Little League. Or basketball. Or piano lessons. When he says he’d like to come home after school each day and just do nothing, and I wonder if I should make him “do something.” I feel the need to say, “Well, that’s fine, but it would be good for you to have something outside of school. A passion. Something to try.”

Does he really need to add anything to his schedule of school and home? Does this boy, this 8-year-old child — whose passions range from reading to book-writing to video-game-creating to hula-hooping — does he really need to do anything else but be himself?

Let him — let us — have as much goddamn nothing as we want. Let us be ourselves. Let us seek out the other stuff when we want it, when we’re ready. I think we could all use a whole lot less doing, and a whole lot more being.

And faith. Faith that life is full enough on its own. And that we have no one to impress. Despite how it feels, no one is watching us as much as we are watching ourselves. No one can tell us what we need or how we should fill our days. Only we can. We have that power. Let’s use it for happiness. For enjoying the most ordinary of our days. Life is shorter than we realize. It makes no sense to live it any other way than with authenticity and in the simple presence of the ones we love.

So, I give you permission to do nothing. As a parent. As a family. As a person. Just be there — with yourself, with each other — and the rest will come together on its own.

Top Medical Groups Say Gun Violence Is A Public Health Crisis

WASHINGTON — Seven medical groups representing most U.S. physicians are seeking to recast gun-related casualties as a public health crisis, pointing to data that blames firearms for 33,000 U.S. deaths and more than double that many injuries in 2013.

The coalition, which also includes the American Bar Association and the American Public Health Association, issued a “call to action” Tuesday that implores the medical community to study deaths and injuries caused by firearms without “political influence or restriction.”

The appeal is made in an editorial and a new study, both published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, and echoes a similar call to physicians two years ago that the groups say went largely unheeded due to political forces. This time, the medical societies outline recommendations to curtail gun violence, such as eliminating “gag orders” that bar physicians from discussing gun ownership with patients, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and advancing universal background checks.

“It does not matter whether we believe that guns kill people or that people kill people with guns — the result is the same: a public health crisis,” Dr. Darren Taichman, the journal’s executive editor, wrote on behalf of the editorial board.

Citing other endemics such as polio and Ebola, the editorial points out that most public health crises have been either vanquished or reduced due to scientific training and monitoring. “But it seems to stop when it comes to firearm injury. Why?” it asks.

The editorial says politicians are, in many ways, to blame. After the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the Senate failed to expand background checks despite overwhelming public support. And last year, the National Rifle Association almost derailed the confirmation of Dr. Vivek Murthy, President Barack Obama’s pick for surgeon general, after he criticized lawmakers for cowering to special interests and not treating gun violence as a public health issue.

Although proponents of stricter gun laws continue to face an uphill battle, the Annals editors encouraged health professionals to keep pressure on Congress and state legislatures by joining the call to action and sending letters to elected officials.

“Have we done our jobs? Can we? The answers are no and maybe: No, we have not sufficiently reduced the firearm-related harms our patients suffer, but maybe we can, if we demand the resources and freedom to do so,” they wrote.

The medical groups backing the call to action are: American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Emergency Physicians, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Physicians, American College of Surgeons, and American Psychiatric Association.

The Cannibal Frames Herself

The Cannibal Frames Herself

The Cannibal painter, famous for chewing her canvases and leaving lovebites in the paint, recalls the comic years before dementia. When little Coco accidentally sliced the tip of her baby brothers pinky, she tasted it. When she saw Michelangelos DAVID naked on a calendar, she ate him. When she attended art school, she discovered her talent for eating boyfriends. When she went to Italy to see the original DAVID, she may have knifed and eaten small parts of a young sculptor. When she hid in Paris to paint her terrors, she rented an attic from a sadistic landlady… with unspeakable consequences.

President Obama to Governors: “I Look Forward to Making Progress Together”

President Obama answers a question following his remarks to the National Governors Association

President Barack Obama answers a question following his remarks to the National Governors Association in the State Dining Room of the White House, Feb. 23, 2015.

Earlier today at the White House, President Obama spoke to America's governors and reaffirmed his commitment to working with them to make more progress across our country.

As he reiterated in his remarks, America's resurgence is real. But even though our nation "is as well-positioned as we've been in a very long time," as the President noted, he also emphasized that we now have to focus on what kind of choices we need to make together going forward to ensure that our momentum is sustained:

Why Turkey Finally Made A Move Against ISIS

WASHINGTON — Turkey made its boldest move yet against the Islamic State over the weekend.

It wasn’t to help the U.S.-led air campaign against the group, something Turkey could do by making its strategic Incirlik Air Base available to American jets. It wasn’t, as has been the case for Egypt and Jordan, to avenge an attack by the extremist group on its nationals. And it wasn’t to aid the Syrian Kurds of Kobani, who faced an Islamic State assault for months as Turkish tanks stood idle on nearby hilltops.

It was, instead, because of history.

Turkey sent tanks and hundreds of troops into Syria late Saturday to save a celebrated shrine threatened by Islamic State militants.

The shrine is the tomb of Suleyman Shah, whose grandson founded the Ottoman Empire. That empire, the immediate predecessor of the modern Turkish republic, decayed for centuries and eventually collapsed after World War I. But many Turks — among them Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — see the Ottoman period as their nation’s grandest moment. Though the tomb is in Syria, where Shah is thought to have died in the 13th century, Turkey retained control of it through a 1921 agreement with Syria’s former colonial ruler, France.

That arrangement, like others in the region, appears to have worked fairly well until the Islamic State entered the picture. Militants linked to the extremist group and other rebels who seek to take portions of Syria from the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad have been operating near and indirectly threatening the Suleyman Shah shrine for months. In March 2014, Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey’s then-foreign minister and current prime minister, said his country would counter any assault on the mausoleum.

“Should there be an attack, either from the regime, or radical groups or elsewhere, it would be countered equally,” Davutoglu said, according to The New York Times. The comments made clear that the Turkish government, a vocal opponent of Assad, would enter his country to defend the shrine.

The incursion over the weekend was the first overt Turkish participation in the four-year Syrian civil war. Reports say up to 40 Turkish soldiers were rescued from the shrine, along with the historical remains and relics stored there. One Turkish soldier was killed in an “accident” during the operation, the Turkish military said. Whether the Turks had to actually fight off Islamic State militants remained unclear.

The government was reportedly nervous that the Islamic State would take the soldiers stationed at the tomb hostage, the way it kidnapped 46 Turks and three Iraqis working with them when it took over the Iraqi city of Mosul over the summer. (The 49 hostages were eventually released under circumstances that remain murky.)

The fighting around the shrine had become more intense in recent days as Syrian Kurdish fighters, fresh from a victory in Kobani, were advancing against fighters with the Islamic State, or ISIS.

Two Turkish newspapers, multiple Kurdish sources and a Turkish security source interviewed by Reuters said that the Turkish troops that went to the tomb, 20 miles from the border with Syria, passed through Kobani. That would represent an easing of tensions between the Turks and the Syrian Kurds, whose relationship has historically been poor because of the Syrian Kurds’ connection to a Kurdish movement that has battled the Turkish state. That relationship worsened when the Turks failed to substantively support Kobani — and, it appeared, permitted ISIS to exploit territory they had abandoned. An improved relationship would be very good news for the U.S.-led fight against ISIS.

The Assad regime, which has made its own efforts to look like a partner to the U.S. against the extremist group, blasted the Turkish move. Turkey is helping the U.S. to train and equip anti-Assad moderate Syrian rebels battle ISIS.

The ancient relics — which include three important sarcophagi — are, for now, being kept at another burial site in Syria, one much closer to the Turkish border (and to the Syrian Kurds.) Though Turkey has destroyed the old mausoleum, Davutoglu said it would like to return the artifacts to that site eventually.

See below what the monument looked like before the raid to rescue it from ISIS — and what has happened to its celebrated relics since.

Compassion Is In the Details

If you were to ever secretly record me watching television, you’d see a lot of this:

2015-02-22-Thefaceof.png

I am a crier. Just a few days ago, I found myself crying at that State Farm commercial where the guy keeps saying he’s never going to do something (get married, have kids, drive a minivan…), then it cuts to a shot of him on the couch with his sleeping wife and two kids saying, “I’m never letting go.” Those four words crawled right out of the television, down my throat and wrestled themselves into nice fat lump for me to get all choked up on. That’s right, people. I cried at a STATE FARM COMMERCIAL. You can add that to the very long list of culprits which have made me weepy, including standing ovations, wedding toasts, the song “Gracie” by Ben Folds, cute old men doing just about anything and the graduation episode of Saved By the Bell. (Damn you, Mr. Belding! I always knew you loved Zack best.)

While I often poke fun at my over-emotional side, someone once told me it was simply a sign that I was a compassionate person… that I was easily moved by the plight of my fellow man and woman. I took the compliment and secretly patted myself on the back. Hell yeah, I’m compassionate! Score another point in getting to the end game of Heaven. Before long, Kelly Suellentrop and Mother Teresa will be practically synonymous. To prove it, witness me ugly cry while watching an episode of Parenthood. I’m feeling all the deep feels for the Bravermans.

But if I really look at my life, how often am I truly compassionate when it matters? And I’m not just talking about the big stuff. Let’s face it: it doesn’t always take a lot of effort to be compassionate on a grand scale, because we usually aren’t doing it alone. When natural disasters hit, when telethons are begging to help sick children or when tragedy is put on the world stage, we know the right move to make because we are people who are mostly good. We can shake our heads in sympathy with others, send our dollars to give some aid and spread the word through organized movements. Those are all worthy things, and we should continue to do them. But in those situations, we can give surprisingly little of ourselves and still make an impact on a larger sense of global humanity. Compassion from afar is still compassion, but it is also a little like crying at the movie Sophie’s Choice. We can easily be moved by something that does not actually require much sacrifice on our part, and then we get to move on.

The real question is how often do I show compassion at all those tiny little moments that make up a lifetime, not just for myself, but for the people with whom I interact? The times that involve me putting aside the ways I might be inconvenienced, annoyed or hurt. The times that challenge my beliefs. The times that are not simply jumping on a bandwagon, but doing something that might only be noticed by the person on the receiving end… if even that. The times that actually require some type of sacrifice from me. Yeah, I’m not always so good at that.

Compassion is usually not on the table when my daughter has to suffer some terrible consequence for forgetting a school assignment because geez, it’s not my day to remember all your crap. I am not exactly compassionate when my son hurts himself doing something I repeatedly told him not to do, because I told you so. Compassion is scarce when I make sure someone knows I feel put out after reluctantly agreeing to help because seriously, it is eating up my only free time this week to watch all my DVRed shows. I am not always compassionate towards the elderly driver going at a snail’s pace in front of me because for the love of God, man, McDonald’s stops serving breakfast in five minutes and my day really needs to be fueled by a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit with a large Diet Coke. Compassion was not what I expressed for Kanye West in my post about parenting advice from the Grammys, because some people need to know when to just sit the ‘eff down and let a man accept his award. And I am certainly not compassionate when my aging dog defecates on the carpet for the umpteenth time in a month, even though I know deep down she probably wouldn’t do it if she could help it. (I say probably because there’s always the small chance she really does take sick delight in watching my gag reflexes fire on overload, as I scoop up her poop with a plastic bag over my hand, then try not to use that specific hand for eating the rest of the day because I swear there is still the faint ghost smell of feces on it.)

Those things don’t seem like life-changing moments. Does showing compassion towards people during such inconsequential incidents matter that much? Can’t I just make up for it when I do my part to end world hunger or raise money for a school? Won’t that translate enough compassion to others and, most importantly, to my children?

Here’s the thing: Compassion is in the details.

I truly believe the world is sustained by the tiniest acts of compassion, just as a beach is composed of the smallest grains of sand.

2015-02-22-Theworldissustainedbythetiniest.png

Not only do those grains come together to create something greater than themselves, but they are transient, able to be carried elsewhere in plastic pails or between toes, to bring the beach to places it otherwise wouldn’t be. Yet if the beach was simply made of one giant piece of sand, it would surely be impressive… but it could only exist in that one place. No one could bring a piece of the beach with them.

In the same way, grand scale compassion doesn’t always trickle down to promote the more mundane tiny acts of compassion. Because it requires less self-sacrifice, we are left with a false sense that we have already done our part. It’s like taking the “easy A” course. On the other hand, showing compassion in the details that tend to demand more of us not only makes a difference to those around us, but it goes on to breed compassion in the big picture. If I can suck it up and get over the inconvenience and raging assault to my delicate senses that comes with cleaning up some poo without yelling at my dog that she’s a good-for-nothing nuisance, then donating a Thanksgiving meal to a homeless shelter is a piece of cake. If you’ve ever smelled dog poo, you know that first incident requires way more compassion.

I want my children to see me doing more of these small acts of compassion. The hard acts of compassion. I want them to watch me building my own beach. Then I will give them their own grains of sand to take along wherever life leads, and hope they build castles and shorelines of their own, one seemingly inconsequential moment of compassion at a time. And I will probably cry when they do…

…mostly because it will remind me of when Barbara Hershey dies in the movie Beaches. I mean, I am pretty compassionate after all.

Half-Million Supporters Demand Pardon For Persecuted Gay Men Day After Graham Moore’s Oscar Speech

On the heels of screenwriter Graham Moore’s moving Oscars speech for his role in creating “The Imitation Game,” the family of the film’s protagonist, late mathematician Alan Turing, is demanding justice.

More than 60 years after their British ancestor died, the family is fighting for others who, like Turing, experienced mistreatment because of their sexual orientation.

As AFP reported, Turing’s great-nephew, great-niece and great-niece’s son handed over a petition with more than 523,000 signatures to British Prime Minister David Cameron’s office on Monday. The Change.org initiative demanded the British government pardon roughly 49,000 men who, like Turing, were convicted under the country’s former “gross indecency” law that banned gay relations. Turing’s “crime” was pardoned in 2013 by Queen Elizabeth II, but his family wants others to reap the same justice.

Turing — a computer scientist who helped crack the German naval code during World War II, leading to a breakthrough against the Nazis — died by suicide in 1954. Two years prior, he’d been convicted of “gross indecency” with a 19-year-old man and chose chemical castration instead of serving jail time.

Moore — who wrote the 2014 film that tells the story of Turing’s contributions during World War II — opened up about his personal experiences dealing with depression on Sunday while accepting the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

“I tried to commit suicide at 16 and now I’m standing here,” he said. “I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message along.”

Turing’s great-niece, Rachel Barnes, spoke out about why she was fighting for the men who’d been persecuted, saying it defied reason to only pardon her relative while so many others did nothing wrong.

“I consider it to be fair and just that everybody who was convicted under the gross indecency law is given a pardon,” she said, according to The Guardian. “It is illogical that my great-uncle has been the only one to be pardoned when so many were convicted of the same crime. I feel sure that Alan Turing would have also wanted justice for everybody.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who was nominated for an Oscar for portraying Turing in the film, also joined the call for action last month.

“Alan Turing was not only prosecuted, but quite arguably persuaded to end his own life early, by a society who called him a criminal for simply seeking out the love he deserved, as all human beings do,” he wrote in an email to The Hollywood Reporter. “Sixty years later, that same government claimed to ‘forgive’ him by pardoning him. I find this deplorable, because Turing’s actions did not warrant forgiveness — theirs did — and the 49,000 other prosecuted men deserve the same.”
